A Dangerous Collaboration Giveaway
That is the question our fearless adventuress Veronica Speedwell asks herself at the start of A Dangerous Collaboration, the latest in the Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn. And, as is the way with Veronica and her erstwhile colleague Stoker, an adventure is indeed impending. One that involves murder and just the right amount of mayhem to keep a reader on the edge of her seat.
In A Dangerous Collaboration, Veronica has been unwittingly roped into a intriguing mystery on the Isle of St. Maddern’s off the coast of Cornwall. Tiberius Templeton-Vane, Stoker’s elder brother, has lured her to accompany him to a house party of his friend, Malcolm Romilly, with the promise of the extremely rare larvae of the Oleria romillia, the Romilly Glasswing butterfly, for her vivarium collection. Needless to say, Stoker, who knows his brother, is not pleased with this turn of events. However, as we know too well, Veronica’s greatest weakness is all thing lepidoptera, so without further thought as to why Tiberius would want her to tag along to a house party- posing as his fiancee, no less- she packs her carpetbag with all the necessities, particularly her little velvet stuffed mouse, Chester, and boards the train for Cornwall. When she disembarks in Pencarron, who should be waiting for Tiberius and her but Stoker, having decided to crash the party in more ways that one. Together, the three sail to St. Maddern’s Isle to Romilly Castle where all is most certainly not how it appears. From the noticeable mood shifts in Tiberius to the obvious familial tension between the women of the household to the overarching mystery of what happened to Malcolm’s bride, Rosamund, when she disappeared without a trace three years prior on her wedding day, Veronica is in for more than she bargained. But, that’s just how Veronica likes it. Now, if only Stoker would get on board and stop brooding about all the feelings that she insists remain unspoken between them.
This romp to Cornwall is well worth the read- and I’m not just saying that because I find Cornwall to be an inexplicable draw with all it’s atmospheric settings. It is always a delight to read any new offering from Deanna Raybourn. Her writing is exemplary, her characters are unforgettable, and her plots are throughly engrossing.
A Dangerous Collaboration, the fourth in the series, has just hit the shelves here in the United States, and it is my great pleasure to be able to host this Spring giveaway.
